Jersey care · Evergreen guide
A college jersey is not a t-shirt. The names, numbers and stripes are heat-pressed or stitched onto the fabric, and heat, bleach and rough cycles are exactly what destroy them. Wash it like a t-shirt and you will see cracking numbers and peeling lettering within a season. Wash it like below, and it will look right for years.
The 60-second routine
- Turn it inside out. This protects the pressed numbers and stitched lettering from friction — the single most important step.
- Cold water, gentle cycle. 30°C / 86°F or lower. Heat is the enemy of every pressed layer.
- Mild detergent, no bleach, no softener. Softener coats performance mesh and kills its breathability.
- Wash with similar colors — never with jeans, towels or anything with zippers and hooks.
- Air dry, always. Lay flat or hang. A dryer will shrink the fit and curl the edges of pressed numbers.
Stain triage: what to do before the wash
| Stain | Treatment | Never |
|---|---|---|
| Grass | Dab rubbing alcohol, rinse cold, then wash | Scrubbing the number side |
| Sweat / deodorant | Paste of baking soda + water, sit 30 min | Chlorine bleach |
| Food / soda | Cold rinse from the back of the fabric, then gentle wash | Hot water (sets the stain) |
| Mud | Let it dry fully, brush off, then wash cold | Wetting fresh mud immediately |
Golden rule: treat the stain on the plain side of the fabric, never directly on the pressed number or name plate.
Custom jerseys need one extra step
A custom name-and-number jersey has a personalization layer on top of the factory print, so it is the most delicate of the three. Wash it inside out on cold from day one, skip the stain-pre-treat step directly on the lettering, and never iron it — if you must remove wrinkles, iron the inside of the garment on low with a cloth barrier, keeping the iron away from all printed areas. Full details live on our jersey care guide.
Storage: how to keep it season-ready
Long-term folding puts permanent creases right across pressed numbers. If you display it, hang it on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight. If you store it, fold loosely with the number on the outside of the fold, or roll it around a tube. Either way: dry, cool, dark. Attics and car trunks are where jerseys go to die.
Myth check
- “Hand wash only” — not true. A gentle machine cycle inside out is fine and honestly more consistent than most hand washing.
- “Dry cleaning is safest” — false. Dry-cleaning solvents can react with pressed layers. Skip it.
- “Numbers crack because of cheap jerseys” — mostly false. They crack because of dryers. Heat does the damage, not the price tag.
If your old one is beyond saving
Sometimes the damage is done — and the fix is a fresh one. Every jersey on College Gear Hub ships with the care card above, and our size guide makes the replacement an easy click. Two fan favorites to start:
Take care of it and a jersey outlives the player's eligibility by decades. That is the whole point.
